Slide Ranch is a magical place that transports the entire family. The physical location is stunning, the staff is exceptional and the ranch itself provides such a needed and thoroughly enjoyable opportunity to reconnect with the natural world. My husband, 7 year old daughter, 3 year old son and I love Slide Ranch!

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... teaching children the connection between nature and food by making meals using ingredients from the garden and eggs from the hens.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... everything. The garden, the staff, the location, the activities. It's wonderful.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... exceptional, unique people.

Ways to make it better!

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... obviously funding (and possibly the National Park Service).

My family loves Slide Ranch. The chance to take my "City" kid to a farm near by is priceless. Goats, plants, learning about farming, and a chance to participate and learn real skills (spinning yarn, baking, milking)such great life long experience. I wish we could live at the ranch it is a beautiful place to visit.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... My son talked about the Ranch for weeks. Now when we are planning weekend trips, he always asks to go to places were there are animals (particularly goats!)

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The people who work there are friendly and responsive to "client" concerns.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Knowledgable, friendly, smiled alot, very, very helpful.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Provide amazing experiences (over nights, weekend camping trips, after school opportunities, family get always) for all the city bound kids, teens, and adults who have never had a pleasure of spending time on a working farm.

Ways to make it better!

    * My experience would have been better if... The farm were bigger! More space.

    * If I ran this organization, I would... Hold more open house events for the community.

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Money, money, money of course, as well as fighting the apathetic feelings that Americans seem to have toward the farming life and handmade products, or hands on experiences. Also the fight to get people off of and away from days filled with too much media driven video entertainment (T.V., video, computers).

    * One thing I'd also say is that... Slide Ranch is part of the fabric of the Bay Area. It protects a beautiful piece of the coast from development, it provides a great escape from the claustrophobia of urban life, it is a reminder that life is more than fast forward, mass consumption. That with a chance to slow down, stop, and look around you can see, feel, taste and hear life.

My 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter absolutely love Slide Ranch and talk about going there all the time. We have done the family campout, Spring Fling and Family Farm Days. All are really well run, very engaging for the children and the location is spectacular. My kids love milking and petting the friendly goats, making bread and sitting by the campfire at the campout. If we could go every weekend, we would!!

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... My kids growing understanding of nature and wildlife.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The great counselors.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Amazing! Truly engaged with the children.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Open more slide ranches

Ways to make it better!

    * If I ran this organization, I would... Market Slide Ranch to more people.

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... parking

    * One thing I'd also say is that... Go to Slide Ranch and experience this amazing gift.

Stunning retreat. My 4 and 3 year old sons talk about their visits there often. The staff was knowledgeable, patient and kind. My boys gathered eggs from the chicken coop, milked goats and picked vegetables and herbs from the garden. They were so proud watching us eat up the vegetable fritatta they had so much fun preparing on the outdoor stove.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... how beautiful the land is kept

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... how much I learn about nature and the environment

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... enthusiastic and informative

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... enable more students and children from all over to experience the beauty of nature and the gifts that are worth preserving

I was a Board Member & I was a teacher and staff person and then a Board member.

I was a teacher intern, then Operations Director and finally Board member of Slide Ranch over the period of almost six years. The benefits to me personally of being involved ranged from the emotional reward of seeing the wonder on the faces of youth from Oakland who had never before seen the ocean, to the profound experience of slaughtering a chicken with my own hands for food, to the political growth I was exposed to in understanding the importance of local food systems and joining the Marin Food Policy Council.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... the enrichment of the teachers and staff who have lived there, and whose lives it changed, and in the excitement and wonder of the children who have visited.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The combination of experiential, hands-on education with the practice and theory of how food, the earth and our culture are interrelated.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Compassionate, committed, open-hearted, and smart.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Redevelop the facilities to continue to serve the Bay Area for another century.

Ways to make it better!

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... how to maintain the vibrant and transformative program with infrastructure that is failing and limited.

Both of my Children (ages 9 and 23) have attended the Slide Ranch Summer programs from ages 5 on. No less than an absolutely wonderful organic experience for them both (that the older one still speaks of to this day.) It's a very special part of our summer together as a family. Thank you Slide Ranch!

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... the growth and happiness of my children.

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... fundraising, as with all non-profits - but this one is really worthwhile.

I have a Sixteen year old son who has attended Slide Ranch since seven years old. He has been a counselor for the last four years. Slide Ranch really helps our youth appreciate the enviroment, humans, and the love of life. Iam so excited when the summer comes so my teen can leave the material, fast pace life for the beauty of slide ranch offers. Now his eight year old sister will attend slide ranch for her third year and experience the years of joy he has. I can't say anough about the people and enviroment at slde ranch. If you want your child to go to a camp that will teach them the beauty of our mother earth while having fun Slde Ranch is that magical place for your child!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Slide Ranch camp is my daughters' favorite and everyone to whom we've recommended it feels the same way. The opportunity for kids to experience cycles of food production firsthand in such a beautiful setting is unique.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... the wonderful experiences my children and the children of my friends have had at the camp.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... supporting local, organic, sustainable agriculture.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... dedicated and fun.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... offer more programs for inner city children who are sadly distanced from natural food sources.

Ways to make it better!

    * My experience would have been better if... the camp days could have been a bit longer, provided lunch, and had more programs that overlapped my childrens' ages.

    * If I ran this organization, I would... be most concerned about the leasing of the land.

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... again, the stability of the location.

    * One thing I'd also say is that... I think the northern Bay Area is very lucky to have Slide Ranch's stewardship of this stretch of coastline.

Five starts for good old Slide Ranch, which is more than a "non-profit" or a collection of programs, more than the sum of its parts. It is way of thinking, of being in the world, utterly bound in space and time to there and now.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... taking people out of their default reality.

Ways to make it better!

    * My experience would have been better if... there were more animals. Horses.

Slide Ranch is such a wonderful place for our nature deprived children to learn about where our food comes from and experience how a farm works. The staff is friendly, knowledgable and caring. The programs Slide Ranch offers are age-appropriate and full of learning and excitement for the children. The setting is absolutely stunning. It is such a magical place for the whole family. We are so lucky to live close enough to enjoy this special place.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... young, energetic, knowledgable, caring, great with kids.

I love the goats at camp. I like taking the goats for walks when I am at camp. It's fun running with the goats. I really like Fiona but she might not be at camp this summer because she doesn't produce milk anymore. Milking a goat is so fun. By Sylvie age 8

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... quality of programs.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... it is in a beautiful setting and the animals and nature are wonderful.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... committed and enthusiastic.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... re- build the structures to satisfy the Golden Gate National Park District requirements. Fund the educators in the program to become better at what they already do so well.

Ways to make it better!

    * My experience would have been better if... we could drink the goat milk squirted straight from the goats teat like we used to do.

    * If I ran this organization, I would... hire someone with lots of experience to keep it going as it currently is is going. I like its roughness and simplicity.

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... expectations and money. don't fix what isn't broken.

    * One thing I'd also say is that... I love Slide Ranch the way it is. It is simple. It is a beautiful natural setting. It is a great place for city kids to get the taste and freedom of the country farm life and the learn to appreciate the beauty of the ocean. They can learn about conservation, food and nature all in one beautiful place close to the city for us parents who will drive them to the experience.

This summer, my older daughter will spend time at Slide Ranch summer camp----for the 8th year in a row. It's the first place she asks to attend and she looks forward to it every year...all year long. My younger daughter will be attending for her 5th summer and is equally enthusiastic. Slide Ranch is a special place...from the fennel forest to the goats, from the wonderful counselors and staff to the amazing location. My girls are learning about their environment and nature in a way I wish I could have experienced at their age. And it is giving them an appreciation for all that Slide Ranch represents. Thank you for the opportunity to share.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Amazing!! So warm and giving of themselves and their knowledge.

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... sustainability.

I was a Client Served & My son attended summer camp

02/20/09

My child attended a week of summer camp at Slide Ranch for 5 years in a row. It was a high point of each summer for him! As an urban child, the opportunity to be outdoors, enjoy the garden, learn about the garden and how food is grown, to enjoy the tide pools and so much more, was very special. Thank goodness the Bay Area has such a wonderful place for families to explore the outdoors, appreciate nature and enjoy the amazing organic gardens!

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... the smile on my child's face at the end of each day of summer camp.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... friendly, helpful, knowledgable.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... bring even more urban children out to enjoy the garden, animals, outdoors, hiking and tide pools for longer periods of time.

Ways to make it better!

    * My experience would have been better if... the program content changed a bit more from summer to summer.

I was a Professional with expertise in this field & worked as an employee of Slide Ranch

02/20/09

As a former staff person, I have seen the value of Slide Ranch on both the clients served as well as on the residential teacher training program for the teaching interns. These teachers are the "face of Slide Ranch." When participants disembark from their bus or car, they are embraced by the expansive view of the ocean, the breeze on their skin, the wild land beneath their feet. Then they meet a warm-hearted guide for the day who teaches about what and where they live. The experience arises authentically from the land, and by the end of the day most children are so touched they never want to leave. The impressions last for a lifetime. I have seen many parents bring their children to family day programs because they remember their personal experience of Slide Ranch from their own youth, remember being touched to their core with appreciation for this planet and our role in it, and want to share that very same experience with their own children. For myself, and for countless others, my time at Slide Ranch is one that has changed who I am in the world.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... the faces of countless children opening in wonder

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... how close it is to our everyday world, yet how far removed it seems at the same time

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... inspired, grounded, heart felt.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... bring the facilities up to modern building code standards set out by the National Park Service...but hopefully without losing their quaint charm

Ways to make it better!

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... the bureaucracy of the National Park Service interfering with reasonable development of the site...and, of course, the relentless need for fund raising in tough economic times.

I was a Client Served & Kindergarten Teacher

02/20/09

As a kindergarten teacher, I have been bringing my students to Slide Ranch for more than 15 years!! It has always been an integral part of our environmental curriculum. Our visits to the ranch have offered a wonderful way to underscore the incredible beauty of nature and the importance of developing a personal responsibility for the care of our planet! We have eaten from the organic garden, milked the goats, run in the fields with the lambs, and eaten lunch with a beautiful vista of both the mountains and the powerful sea. We have hiked down a steep mountain to experience the wonders of the tidepools below, made soap from one of the garden plants, worked with the wool that has been shorn from a sheep, and made our own butter from the goat's milk. With these experiences and so many more, the fabulous teaching interns have always been insightful, knowledgeable, creative and so much FUN!! Slide Ranch has always been our favorite field trip of the year. It is a perfect place for all of us, adults and children alike, to take some critical steps closer to our connection with the wonders of mother earth!!

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... the way that my students begin to show a consciousness about caring for our planet.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the beauty, the information shared, and the opportunity to celebrate the wonders of nature.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... skilled, knowledgeable, creative, wonderfully engaging.....great!!

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... be available to many more children...especially children from the inner city. Providing firsthand opportunities to touch the earth, work in an organic garden, run through fields with lambs and kids, see bees in their hive, etc....this is what is needed to develop a sense of joy and personal responsibility for nature in all children.

Ways to make it better!

    * My experience would have been better if... my students could spend every week at the ranch! We all love the experience so much!

    * If I ran this organization, I would... do exactly what has been done for so many years!

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... finding the means to provide visits for inner city children who have little or no first hand experiences with the glory of nature.

    * One thing I'd also say is that... Slide Ranch reminds all of us of both the endless beauty and the critical fragility of nature. It is a perfect way to instill a sense of personal involvement in maintaining the wonders of our planet. I love Slide Ranch!!

I was a Client Served & tranport of granddaughter and her new friends

Our granddaughter was extremely enthusiastic about her experience at Slide Ranch. The expertise of the counsellors, the adventures of domestic animal contact, seashore exploration, garden and making hand make projects such as candles and cheese as we observed and she reported combined to provide her with a very broadening experience. We very highly recommend this Slide Ranch.

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... the attitude of United States government, which has threatened to move them from their present outstanding site to another very inferior site. The government's reason is uncomprehensible.

For decades, Slide Ranch has served as a valuable reminder that living simply in harmony with nature and gentle cultivation of the earth can be healing and healthy. As an example to our children and their parents, their diverse courses teach local sustainable organic farming, including raising farm animals for milk and grazing for compost in gardening and poultry for eggs, food and fertilizer. These simple, traditional ways of living on a stressed earth are now more important than ever. Because I live nearby and have dozens of fruit trees, I have called upon the teachers of Slide to come and harvest our fruit, berries and nuts. In exchange, they have given us eggs and produce. Community outreach to Marin kids and disenfranchised inner city kids is one of the more vital purposes of Slide and its devoted staff and volunteers. As a fully functioning farm Slide teaches, by example, agrarian and sustainability skills that cannot be learned in schools. By connecting children with nature, their program fulfills our evolutionary and biologic essence. Southern Marin is enriched by their presence showing all of us ways to live more holistically with the ecosystem. Their function as teachers to our children is imperative to true sustainability.

The Great!

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the community interaction.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... exceptional, dedicated and committed.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... invest in an independent energy system to serve as a sustainability and green example to Southern Marin residents and beyond. They could also invest in upgraded housing for their live-in teachers and staff.

Slide Ranch rocks! It is one of my favorite places on the planet. My daughter and I have gone to weekend events for the past four years, and this summer she will attend camp. We have milked a goat, fed chickens and turned the eggs in the incubator, and even learned what a turkey waddle does. My favorite part of each trip is the circle talk about respect, the animals, each other and the planet.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... myself and my daughter. On each visit we learn new things about animals and how to care for them.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the complete joy with which they teach all of us.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... amazing in their patience and dedication.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... create other locations to visit and learn.

I was a Client Served & My daughter attended camp/her school had a field trip there

02/20/09

Slide Ranch has been a great experience for my daughter. First her school had an overnight trip there which was very well organized and our very diverse group of city kids got to milk goats, hold chickens, run through fennel and really experience farm life and coastal life. Since that trip she has been two summers to camp there and is looking forward to a third. We have been to one day family days and just love the people who run the farm. For me - it is a truly magical spot - a charming farm, in a sweet valley - right on the coast!

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... Both my daughter and her classmates getting a wonderful exposure to nature and farm life.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... Milking goats! Watching chicks hatch! Making cheese and bread!

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Very knowledgeable, kind, interested in the students and very energetic!

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Build a great main hall to house classes and exhibits, refurbish living spaces for their volunteers that are close to falling down and do more outreach to inner city students.

Ways to make it better!

    * My experience would have been better if... They are working hard to raise money to be able to improve their facilities - this would be wonderful!

    * If I ran this organization, I would... Keep doing what they are doing.

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Raising money to keep their great programs going. We need more organizations like this to help get our urban kids out into nature.

I was a Client Served & Milked a goat, picked up a chicken and learned about sustainable farming

02/20/09

Slide Ranch is one of my favorite places on the planet. It has provided my family with an opportunity to experience life on a sustainable small farm. We first went on a LGBT Family day with our two year old daughter. All three of us milked a goat for our first time. In small groups we made bread and cheese, we picked a salad from the garden and shared a meal together under the trees. Making bread and cheese so simply was eye opening for us parents. Our daughter discovered the worm composting bin and it was her favorite part of that first trip. We have gone once a year since, 4 times so far, and have gotten to see sheep shearing, tide pools and learned how to pick-up a chickens. We have enjoyed the new crop of interns each year. This very special place provides intimate and mindful learning experiences in a way no larger organization ever could.

The Great!

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the yearly rotation of new interns who run the programs. They each bring their own excitement about the place and its mission, so our time there is always fresh. It also makes clear how each intern takes the message of the place and carries out in the world as they go one to the next part of their life out in the world.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... provide this unique experience to more City school children. Money could be spent on transportation to and from the ranch. And on renovating structures and bringing running water to the group campground.

Ways to make it better!

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... maintaining the structures on the property for safety and longevity.

Provides an extraordinary opportunity for kids to experience the outdoors and learn about the environment. Wonderful staff, great values. My kids had an amazing experience here and will continue to attend the camp every summer. We are very lucky to have this in our backyard.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... the happy looks on my kids faces at the end of the camp day.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... kind, caring and great with the kids.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... provide this opportunity to more children, particularly through offering more scholarships

My kids have been attending weekend activities at Slide Ranch since before they could walk. The highlight of our summer is the week they attend farm camp at Slide Ranch. Through Slide Ranch, these city kids came to appreciate the joys and challenges of farming, eat vegetables they harvested themselves, make friends with chickens and goats. They think of themselves as having an important connection to the land. It's a rare and wondrous institution.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... children's appreciation for the land and understanding of our connection to it.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... its beauty and simplicity. In a world of speed, high-tech and complicated modern things, Slide Ranch embodies simpler, quieter values.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... terrific: passionate and energetic young people.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... provide its camps and activities to low-income kids and schools. (Right now, the programs are pretty expensive.)

Ways to make it better!

    * If I ran this organization, I would... keep it the way it was, but seek funding to lower the costs. I would also provide a shuttle service for summer camp to make it accessible to more kids and to reduce traffic on Highway One.

The staff are well organized, creative and very respectful of both children and adults. It is a great program. I highly recommend it to all I know.

The Great!

    * I've seen the results of this organization in... I've seen children exposed to animals and outdoor survival skills.

    * What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The staff's thoughtfulness in exposing children to nature and care of animals.

    * The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... wonderful and respectful.

    * If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Continue to ensure the land is preserved for future generations.

Ways to make it better!

    * In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Continual survival in keeping Slide Ranch as a place the community can go to.

    * One thing I'd also say is that... It's very well run.
