Teacher-in-Residence Internships

These are residential "live-on-the-ranch" positions — housing and food provided plus a monthly stipend.

Apply yourself on many levels for 10-½-months on the cultivated and wild lands of the Pacific Coast.  The work challenges you to grow as a person and as a professional educator. You will gain valuable hands-on experience in agricultural and environmental education and learn how to live and work in a rural setting as a member of a farm community. Teachers plan and lead experiential educational programs that include the exploration of our farm, garden, trails and tide pools.

The work week typically involves 5 teaching days. About once or twice a month during the school year, a Professional Development Day replaces a teaching day. Teachers are responsible for daily ranch chores and maintenance projects that can be physically demanding.   Some days are quite long with morning meeting at 8 a.m. and farm work into the evening.

Community-related responsibilities include weekly chores, cooking dinner for the community twice each month and monthly resident meetings. Teacher meetings and weekly garden/ranch sessions complement the position. The central focus of this position is on teaching. Teachers-in-Residence will leave having taught students from a great diversity of backgrounds.

Qualifications

Prior experience in education or working with children required. Gardening, animal care, environmental education, second language and community living and carpentry skills are valuable assets.
