Slide Ranch is making a special effort to protect our bee population and to teach students to appreciate, and not fear, bees. This month our Teachers in Residence had a special bee training led by Drew, our animal care manager, and beekeeper Mike Turner.
What could San Francisco city kids see at Slide Ranch that would be so transformative?
They spent their day milking goats, feeding chickens, harvesting herbs in the garden, baking bread and exploring tide pools. In the evening, they climbed exhausted into tents beneath the stars and above the Pacific, with only the sounds of the nocturnal birds and crashing waves to lull them to sleep. Awaking with the sun, the children discovered something had arrived at Slide to greet them in the morning...
Our ranch by the sea is a place where we learn about the connection between the food we eat and the impact it makes on the environment. Tough Tiger taught us all a lesson on how our food and life choices impact the whole ecosystem.
