A Farewell to Amber
On Sunday, 12/29/2024, the Slide Ranch family bid farewell to our beloved goat, Amber. Amber was ~16 years young (a very ripe old age for a goat!) and spent the majority of her years here at Slide Ranch delighting and winning the hearts of school children, campers, visitors, and of course our staff. She was our matriarchal goddess, our beloved grandma of the goats, and loved being the center of attention. Amber had loads of personality, a wonderful toothy grin, and easily charmed visitors with her curious and approachable demeanor. She also had a good stubborn streak! Amber boasted the best beard on the ranch, was a big fan of scratching up on anything and everything, including fence posts and people, and loved a good clothes nibble. You could always expect a little tug on any loose clothing when she came to say hello!
Amber was a Saanen (pronounced SAW-Nen) goat. The Saanen breed originated in Switzerland and are the most widely distributed dairy goat in the world. They are known for their calm, sweet, gentle demeanor, their hardiness, and for their high milk production (up to 3 gallons a day!). Saanens are also known to be excellent mothers and Amber was no exception. While at Slide Ranch, Amber birthed several kids, with her most recent joining the world spring, 2017.
All of us here at Slide Ranch are grateful for the time and gift of presence Amber gave us. She is very much missed. If you have any favorite Amber memories or tributes, we invite you to share them on our social media pages. Links provided below.
