Camp!
Camp is an amazing thing. It's adventure. It's freedom. It's new friends and old friends. It's new discoveries. It's time to experiment. It's time to be creative or silly or both. It's time to try leading or following or a little of both. It's time to be out and moving and laughing and singing and cooking. It's time to step outside your comfort zone. It's time to just lay in the grass and watch the clouds go by, dip your toes in the water, make sand scultptures, mudsculptures, dough sculptures, flower sculptures (ok you get the point). It's time to spend a whole week learning without studying and it's also perhaps a time to learn to use your voice in ways you hadn't done so before. I say all of the above for our campers, our amazing instructors, and our staff as a whole.
Last week we welcomed a mighty group of campers for Spring break and loved every moment of exploring Slide Ranch with them. About half the group were seasoned Slide Ranch veterans and half brand new to the Slide Ranch camp experience, but all were super enthusiastic and excited for every adventure. While we love our school programs, there is something special about the camp experience that provides a freedom to truly engage in child-lead explorations. I feel truly fortunate here at Slide Ranch where we have so many different experiences our campers can experience, from herding our goats and sheep to pasture, to collecting eggs, to baking in a cob oven, cooking over an open fire, harvesting from the garden, tidepooling in one of Marin's best tidepool spots, exploring bones and decomposition and compost and so much more.
While I grew up in an age where outdoor adventure was a part of every day after school, I still look back at my outdoor camp experiences as some of my favorite adventures. And while those camp days may be far away, I am grateful every day for the new adventures here at Slide Ranch and for the many children that share their time with us.
