Counselors In Training (CITs)
Our Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program (formerly JEEs) offers youth aged 12-17 the opportunity to build essential leadership skills while supporting Slide Ranch's summer camp programs. CITs are integral members of our camp team—working alongside our staff, guiding younger campers, assisting with hands-on activities, and learning the fundamentals of outdoor education. CITs develop their confidence as role models, learn practical childcare techniques, and gain experience in environmental stewardship.
This is a unique program for youth ready to step into a leadership role. CITs are not campers themselves but mentors and helpers, actively contributing to a vibrant and supportive camp community.
Registration for our summer CIT program opens the same date as Summer Camp registration - Dec 2 for member and Dec 9 for the general public. Visit our camp page and scroll to the bottom for registration details.
What to expect from the program:
As a CIT, you'll join us for two Saturday training sessions and one late afternoon session before camp kicks off. These sessions are all about helping you gain the skills and confidence to work with our campers and animals, while also giving you the chance to connect with other CITs and our camp team. By the time summer arrives, you’ll feel ready and excited to dive in!
To become a CIT, youth must register for the CIT training and attend all required training dates. Once training is complete, you'll be able to join us for multiple weeks of camp, depending on your schedule and camp needs. In late April, youth registered for our CIT program can expect to receive a survey where they will select their preferred weeks to support camp. During each week, you’ll play a key role on our team, supporting a specific group of campers alongside a set of dedicated Summer Outdoor Instructors (SOIs). As a CIT, you’ll be an essential part of the camper experience, helping to make every day safe, fun, and memorable.
Your day-to-day tasks will vary, keeping things interesting and dynamic. You might assist SOIs in leading activities, help younger campers feel comfortable during transitions, prepare materials for activities, lead games, tell stories, and more. CITs arrive at 8:30am and leave at 3:30pm, gaining valuable experience in what it takes to run a camp.
Our goal is for you to have an amazing experience at Slide Ranch while building real world skills. We look forward to a fun and rewarding summer together!
Please note, completing our CIT training does not guarantee a CIT spot in our summer camps. Some youth may not yet be ready for the leadership and may still be very much in “camper mode”. That’s ok! If we decide you are not yet ready to be a CIT, you will still be welcome back to try again next year! It is important youth talk with their parent(s)/guardian(s) about being ready for this next step. There is no shame is still wanting to be a camper!
We ask CITs be available for a minimum of 2 camp weeks, if possible. You can earn community service hours as a CIT!
Training Fee: $495
CIT training dates are: May 4th and 10th , 10am - 4pm and June 4th 4:30-6:30pm
