Meet our new Docents!

All of us here at Slide Ranch were excited to launch a new docent program in late fall and are super excited to welcome our first docents, Spore and Springbok! As part of their training they have explored the Ranch, learned about its history, learned to milk goats, care for our flocks, and worked in our organic garden. They spend time on the ranch every Monday and some weekends and are available to create art and poetry in our organic garden with visitors of all ages from 10:30-11:30 most Mondays.

A little more about Spore and Springbok:

Along with the pack of kids in her neighborhood, Spore grew up exploring the woods behind her home in Pennsylvania. "Be home by dark" was pretty much the only rule. After the grown-up world of a fulltime job and raising kids in the Bay Area, she's returning to the sense of awe that comes with being in wild spaces. Her biggest hope is that she can help teach kids (and adults!) that we aren't separate from nature, but rather we are an integral part of nature, forever connected.

Living on the West Coast has brought new opportunities to Springbok, including volunteering at Slide Ranch. She used to run along the Owl Trail en route to other hill climbs and was always drawn to the energy here. Over the last 12 years, her family has been visitors, seasonal jr camp educators, and donors. Happily, she’s now finally getting to the heart of Slide Ranch as a docent… Learning about the history of this beautiful site, how we steward it, care for creatures great and small, “planting kids in nature” through casual visits with friends and family or schools trips, Springbok truly enjoys witnessing the joy of kids of all ages and is eager to engage with visitors and this wonderful community. (Why “Springbok”?  This antelope is small and fast, has some surprising adaptations and is found in South Africa where she was born.)

Slide Ranch is eager to welcome more docents and perennial volunteers! We have regular info sessions on the 1st Monday of each month from 9-10am and the 2nd Saturday of each month from 11am- 12pm. Join us!! For additional information you can also visit our website.
